What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) kills more people than car wrecks, cancer, handguns, house fires and AIDS combined.
On an average day in the United States 1,000 adults die from SCA, a total of 350,000 per year. SCA is not the same as a heart attack (myocardial infarction). While they both affect the heart, sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction, and a heart attack is a “plumbing” malfunction. A heart attack, which may be fatal itself, can trigger sudden cardiac arrest.

What is an AED?
An AED, Automated External Defibrillator, is the only treatment for sudden cardiac arrest. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) only buys time for the victim. CPR will not correct the abnormal heart rhythms found in sudden cardiac arrest victims.
AEDs use voice commands and light signals to convey directions. AEDs are designed for non-medical personnel; you don’t need to be certified to use an AED! An AED will only shock someone who needs a shock.
It is unlikely that the AED itself will make a mistake. Studies show that AEDs interpret the victim’s heart rhythm more quickly and accurately than many trained emergency professionals.
If an AED is applied within 2 minutes of collapse...90% chance of survival. If an AED is applied within 3 minutes...74% chance.

What is the Good Samaritan Law?
State and federal “Good Samaritan” laws protect individuals who, in good faith, attempt to save a person from death. To date, there are no known judgements against anyone who has used an AED to save someone’s life.
